Road, Trail, or Track? Here's How to Pick the Right Running Shoe

Buying Guide: How to Choose the Right Running Shoe

Finding the right running shoe doesn't have to be complicated. Here's what to consider.

1. Know your terrain Singapore runners are mostly on roads, tracks, and treadmills - a road shoe covers all of these. If you're heading to Bukit Timah or MacRitchie, a trail shoe with a grippier sole handles the roots, mud, and uneven ground better.

2. Understand your foot type Your arch height and how your foot strikes the ground affect which shoe works best for you. Flat feet or overpronation? Look at stability or motion-control shoes. High arches? A neutral shoe with good cushioning is usually the right call. Not sure? Our in-store team can assess your gait and point you in the right direction.

3. Choose your cushioning level More cushioning suits long-distance runners and those on their feet all day. A firmer, lower-stack shoe gives better ground feel for speed work and shorter distances. Some runners prefer a balance of both - a daily trainer that handles everything.

4. Get the fit right Sizing can vary between brands. Always try both shoes on, lace them up properly, and walk or jog a few steps if you can. Your foot should feel secure but not tight, with enough room at the toe box to flex naturally.

5. Match the shoe to your training If you run five days a week, invest in a durable trainer built to handle volume. If you're just starting out, a versatile all-rounder is the better call over a highly specialised shoe.

6. Come in for a fitting The best way to find the right shoe is to try it on with expert guidance. Visit Running Lab Singapore for a proper fitting and we'll match you to the right shoe based on your goals, gait, and foot shape.
